Camping at the Trailhead

I love camping at the trailhead or in a set location… and those are words I never thought I would say. Rumor has it I used to enjoy camping as a youngster (think under ten) but then my family stopped going and as I got older, I really appreciated my own bed.

But there’s just something about camping with my horses that I love. I think it’s because it takes the distractions out of life… I can’t do laundry, or clean the house, or respond to e-mails, or be on my phone. My day job can’t reach me.

What I can do is sit in my camp chair, watch my horse graze, and listen to the wind blow through the trees. Or I can read my book to the background noise of my horse chewing.

Anyway. I love the simplicity of camping out of my trailer with the horses and in this post, I’m going to share the tools we use that make it so darn easy and enjoyable.

We use a portable electric fence when we camp at the trailer.

We keep ten of these step-in electric fence posts in our trailer which allows for a good size pen or even allows us to split it into two pens.

We prefer two strands of hot wire and like to use this polytape because it’s easily visible. We have two gate handles tied to the ends of our polytape, which makes for unrolling and setting up a breeze.

The charger we use is a bit of an investment at first but I love that it runs on D batteries and creates a strong charge… even with the screw driver we use as a grounding rod. A lot of times the area we are camping in is rocky and hard ground, and I have found that a long screw driver works well as a grounding rod, doesn’t take up any additional space because it’s part of the “tool kit” we keep in the trailer anyway, and is easy to drive into the ground! I also always make sure I have a fence tester with us so we know that our fence is hot.

We use the large blue bucket above to house all of our equipment in the trailer and then when we get where we’re going and unpack everything, it becomes the horse’s water bucket.

We also have a few of these buckets with us that we can use to get water, to feed in, for the dog’s water… whatever we need them for.

Perhaps the most important thing we bring with us is water. We have two of these 6 gallon jugs (and I should probably get 1-2 more now that I know how nifty they are) that we fill with water before we leave home and bring with us.

WELCOME TO THE BLOG

Fueled by equal parts horse hair and passion, I spend my days capturing the kinds of images that make you stop, smile and ask time to please slow down. Your story, your love, is beautiful and I can’t wait to capture it in images you will treasure for years to come. I believe in real moments and heartfelt conversations on the front porch. In the kinds of images that remind you of the joy that can be found in the simplest of moments together.
