Happy Friday, my friends!
I wanted to fill everyone in on the Piper’s Zoo store. It’s a (constant) work in progress and I’m not ashamed to admit it has been a huge learning curve for me but I think I’m finally getting it figured out!
So where did it come from?
Mostly Instagram. I get a lot of messages asking if I sell my photos as prints and if I sell my Lightroom Presets. The answer had always been “no” because I didn’t know how and didn’t want to take the time to figure it out. How’s that for honesty?!
But how silly. These questions were huge compliments! So I took the time to figure it out. (No, I do not wish to disclose exactly how much time this took me. It turns out, I am not the most technologically advanced person in the world.)
What do I sell?
So far, there are three things in the Piper’s Zoo store!
- Greeting cards in a variety of designs (and even a BRAND NEW variety pack!)
- Prints in a variety of options and sizes
- Lightroom Presets
- 2019 Calendars will be available for pre-order in October!
The cold, hard truth…
I’m not (really, truly) doing this to make money. My profit margin on these items is slim (I’m putting my business schooling to good use with that terminology!). Like, I honestly do not know how people profit from selling things! There are costs every step of the way! If you’re thinking about doing something similar, let me just give you a quick list of things to be aware of from the get-go because these are things that would have been nice for me to know:
- Website. Hosting Piper’s Zoo costs money… not just initially to set it up, but each year as well.
- Cost of products (duh, I know). But also, minimum order requirements!
- Cost of collecting payments (PayPal, Square, Etsy… whatever it is, if it’s legitimate, it’s going to cost you something).
- Shipping. Freaking shipping. Need I say more?
- Time. So. Much. Time. While it’s not a tangible cost, it’s still valuable. It’s the opportunity cost (there I go with that business school crap again!) that you have to think of… the time spent on this endeavor is time that could be spent doing x. (For me, that x is time spent with Kelly, time spent riding, time spent photographing clients, time spent making myself presentable for my actual job… you get it.)
Is it worth it?
Heck yes! Even if I sold only one print or one set of greeting cards or one download of the Piper’s Zoo Presets… that’s still SO STINKIN’ AMAZING to me. To think that someone, somewhere out there in the big ole world is enjoying something that I created is simply spectacular to me.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for supporting me in this journey. You really have no idea how much it means to me and how grateful I am.
