I frequently get asked what camera I shoot with “to get such pretty pictures” as well as what gear I recommend for beginners.
So first, a little education… I realize that it’s likely not meant to put down the years I have spent learning how to operate my camera, but I would never ask a chef what skillet they use to make such yummy food. Make sense? The equipment is only as good as the operator. There are people out there with “lower-level” cameras than what I shoot with who create much more beautiful images than I can. Skill trumps equipment.

But still, I’ll happily share what’s in my camera bag!
Camera Bodies
I currently shoot with a Canon Mark IV and a Canon 6D.
I started with a Canon Rebel and I kept it as a backup when I upgraded. This is also the camera Kelly takes with us on rides.
Lenses
The first lens I purchased was my “nifty fifty” (Canon 50mm f/1.8) and this is the lens I take riding because of it’s compact size and because it’s AWESOME.
I also purchased the Canon 85mm f/1.8 because I needed something with a longer focal length when I upgraded to a full-frame camera and the 85mm is perfect for photographing horses without distorting their bodies. Plus, it’s affordable!
I made the leap a couple years ago and purchased the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM lens and OH MY GOODNESS it is so much fun. I love using it to photograph my own horses in action as well for client portrait sessions.
In 2020 I added a wide lens in the Canon 16-35 f/2.8.
