Oooooh, Jessa. Always making sure to keep it interesting for us.
Did you know most mares foal during the dark hours? Something like 80% of mares foal between midnight and 6:00am. That’s why we have a camera and do night checks when our mares are close, and pay such close attention to them.
So by the time I got to work on Monday morning, we noticed Jessa was acting a little restless – walking around more than usual, kicking at her belly a few times. Kelly and I were both watching the camera and wondering if this was the real deal.
And just like that, Jessa laid down and started pushing. That was all the concrete evidence we needed… Kelly and I each work about an hour away from home, in opposite directions. By the time we got home, Jessa had a beautiful filly toddling around her, trying to figure out how to nurse.
This filly is Jessa’s 9th baby and her first baby that isn’t a bay or a sorrel.
She was sturdy from the get-go, quick to stand up and not overly wobbly, but due to Jessa’s edema, she had a difficult time getting the nursing thing down. We eventually had to step in and help her figure it out, making sure she got the colostrum she needed and once she got it once, she was quick to go back for more!
She’s also super independent and full of energy… I’m sure she’s going to keep her mama on her toes!
And without further ado – introducing Holly (Dunn)!
